Sewing Machine Not Feeding Fabric ? Causes and Easy Fixes

You press the pedal, the needle moves, the machine sounds normal… but the fabric doesn’t. Or it moves in jerks, bunches up, or stitches in one spot.

This is a common issue, and in most cases, you can fix it yourself by checking the machine step by step.

Why does my sewing machine needle hit the plate

1. Check Stitch Length

Sometimes the stitch length is accidentally set to 0.

Effect: Feed dogs move, but the fabric doesn’t advance.

Solution:

  • Set stitch length to 2.5–3
  • Sew on a test scrap
  • Make sure reverse isn’t engaged

Often, this alone fixes the problem.

2. Make Sure Feed Dogs Are Up

Many machines have a feed dog drop feature for free-motion sewing.

Effect: If feed dogs are down, fabric won’t move.

Check:

  • Feed dog drop switch
  • Turn the handwheel manually
  • Feed dogs should rise above the needle plate

If they stay down, the machine cannot feed fabric.

3. Adjust Presser Foot PressureSewing Machine Not Feeding Fabric ?

Not all machines have adjustable presser foot pressure. High-quality models often include a dial, screw, or internal spring.

Effect of wrong pressure:

  • Too low → feed dogs slip, fabric doesn’t move
  • Too high → fabric is squeezed, feeding becomes jerky

Solution:

  • Slightly adjust the pressure
  • Test on cotton fabric
  • Aim for smooth, even feeding

4. Check Thread Tension (Especially for Lightweight Fabrics)

Effect: Tight upper thread tension can hold the fabric in place. Feed dogs try to move it, but the thread pulls back.

Symptoms:

  • Bunching fabric
  • Jerky feeding
  • Stitches in one spot

Solution:

  • Reduce upper thread tension
  • Check threading
  • Test on scrap fabric

5. Clean Feed Dogs

sewing machine tension problems

Lint, dust, and thread pieces under the needle plate often block the feed dogs.

Effects:

  • Fabric stops feeding
  • Feeding becomes uneven
  • Mechanism works under stress

Maintenance:

  • Remove needle plate periodically
  • Clean feed dogs
  • Remove debris
  • Lightly oil according to manual

This is basic maintenance — skipping it often leads to bigger issues.

6. Inspect Needle Plate

Heavy use or dirty operation can bend, warp, or crack the needle plate.

Symptoms:

  • Jerky fabric movement
  • Light scraping noise
  • Uneven feed dog motion

Solution:

  • Remove the needle plate
  • Check for bending or cracks
  • Replace if damaged (replacement parts available online)

7. Check Feed Mechanism

If feed dogs:

  • Don’t rise properly
  • Don’t move forward
  • Move unevenly or out of sync

…then the feed mechanism likely needs adjustment.

Other signs:

  • Jerky fabric movement
  • Noise
  • Needle moves but fabric stays
  • Feed dogs and needle not synchronized

Causes:

  • Feed dog height out of adjustment
  • Timing issue
  • Wear in feed mechanism
  • Long-term lint buildup

If you’ve already checked stitch length, feed dogs, presser foot, tension, cleaning, and needle plate — but the problem remains, seek professional adjustment.

Quick Checklist

  1. Stitch length
  2. Feed dogs engaged
  3. Presser foot pressure
  4. Thread tension (light fabrics)
  5. Clean feed dogs
  6. Check needle plate
  7. Feed dog movement

Most problems are solved in the first few steps.

Technician’s Tip

  • Always check cleaning and settings before assuming a breakdown.
  • Rotate the handwheel manually and watch the feed dogs — it often reveals the issue in seconds.

Bottom Line

If your sewing machine isn’t feeding fabric, the cause is usually settings or maintenance, not a breakdown. Check the machine carefully, step by step, before calling a technician.
